Tigers originate from Eastern and Southern Asia and are not found anywhere else on the planet, unless they are in a Zoo. There is more than one type and these different types are found in different zones. Tigers are extremely adaptable animals and you can find them in forests, dry desert-like areas and even in swamps. They are often found in areas that are very close to where people live. This has meant that they have been hunted, or have caused problems in populated areas. Sadly, the facts are that of the nine species of tiger, three are already extinct. The remaining six species are also endangered. Their habitat has also been reduced because of deforestation and the use of land for agriculture and housing.
Their diet is extremely diverse and depends on the region they live in. As the largest of the big cats they are pretty much at the top of their food chain. Tigers have extremely large sharp teeth and if you are the animal they set their sights on it is unlikely you will get away. In India, they are likely to eat buffalo, water buffalo, boar and deer. In Siberia they eat deer and moose. These giant cats will eat whatever they choose and have even been known to eat snakes and crocodiles, and also smaller animals like monkeys and birds. Those powerful jaws are inescapable and tigers are incredible hunters. So know you know a little more information and if you need to know more you can learn all about tigers at your nearest zoo or library.
